Wide-plank white oak hardwood floor installed in an Arlington, TX living room

Most hardwood floor installation in Bedford is replacement work: a house built in the 1970s or 1980s, an original floor that has worn out or gone out of style, and an owner who wants real wood instead. Before any new boards arrive, the old floor has to come up cleanly and the concrete under it has to be ready.

Species, grades, fastening methods and pricing factors are explained on our main hardwood floor installation page. Here we cover what tends to come up in Bedford houses, from parquet removal to slab prep.

Replacing Original Floors in Bedford's 1970s and 1980s Homes

Bedford filled in fast. The city went from 10,049 residents in 1970 to 43,762 in 1990 (U.S. Census), and the median home here was built in 1983, according to American Community Survey estimates for 2020 to 2024. Since then the city has been close to fully developed: only about 3 percent of its housing went up in 2010 or later. So nearly every hardwood job we quote in Bedford begins with taking something out.

What comes up varies. Some houses still have glue-down parquet, a style whose popularity in American homes peaked in the 1960s. Others have sheet vinyl in the kitchen, ceramic tile in the entry and carpet everywhere else. The concern is what holds those floors down. The EPA warns that the backing on older sheet vinyl and some black adhesives, often called black mastic, may contain asbestos, so we do not grind or scrape suspect residue until a lab test clears it. Once the slab is clean, we check moisture and flatness, then usually recommend engineered hardwood glued to the concrete or floated over a moisture barrier, since solid boards need a wood subfloor to nail into.

What a Bedford Hardwood Installation Quote Includes

For a Bedford hardwood job, we put these items in writing:

  • Removal and haul-away of the existing parquet, vinyl, tile or carpet
  • A pause for lab testing when old adhesive or vinyl backing looks suspect
  • Slab moisture readings, plus grinding or self-leveling of high and low spots (see subfloor repair and leveling)
  • Engineered or solid boards, compared side by side on our engineered hardwood installation page
  • Undercut door casings and transitions where wood meets tile or carpet
  • Baseboard or quarter round, cleanup and a carton of leftover boards

Tear-Out Planned Into Every Quote

In a city this built out, a new wood floor almost always replaces an old one. We price removal, disposal and slab cleanup as separate lines, look under a corner of the old floor at the estimate when we can and tell you before work starts if adhesive needs testing. You see the full cost of reaching bare concrete.

Species Picked for Your Household

Red and white oak cover most Bedford requests, and white oak rates a little harder on the Janka scale. Hickory, at 1,820, suits big dogs and busy kitchens. We bring samples of each, explain how stain color and sheen change how scratches show and let you decide while holding the boards in your own light.

FAQ

Hardwood Floor Installation in Bedford: FAQ

Can new hardwood go right over the old parquet in my Bedford house?

Sometimes. If every parquet tile is firmly bonded and flat, some engineered floors can float over it, as long as the added height still clears doors, appliances and thresholds. Loose or cupped tiles have to come up first. If we remove parquet, we look at the adhesive underneath and have it tested before anyone grinds it.

Is solid hardwood possible on the slab in a Bedford home?

It is, but it costs more. Solid 3/4 inch boards are nailed, so on concrete they need a plywood subfloor fastened over a moisture barrier, which raises the floor and adds labor. Engineered hardwood bonds or floats directly over the prepared slab and can look the same once installed. We can price both.

Do you cover all of Bedford?

Yes. Bedford covers about 10 square miles in the Mid-Cities, between Hurst and Euless along SH 183 and SH 121, and we work across all of it from our base in Arlington.
