Laminate in Grand Prairie's Two-Story and 1990s Homes
About 41 percent of Grand Prairie's housing was built in 2000 or later, and roughly 9,000 more homes date from the 1990s (American Community Survey, 2024). A good share of the newer ones are two-story houses, including many in Mira Lagos and Grand Peninsula near Joe Pool Lake. If yours still has the carpet and vinyl it was built with, laminate is a common way to replace both without paying hardwood prices.
The two levels get different treatment. Downstairs, the slab gets a moisture check and a vapor barrier, and we grind or fill until it meets the maker's flatness limit. Upstairs, the planks float over plywood or OSB panels, so we walk the floor for loose panels and squeaks and screw them down first, because a laminate floor will not quiet a noisy subfloor. Footsteps on a hard floor also carry into the room below more than they did on carpet. For upstairs bedrooms and game rooms over a living area, we often suggest a denser sound underlayment, as long as the plank maker allows it with their product.
